Wai Wai Ethnic Decorative Paddle

MNRM-G-1

The rustic style that surrounds the decorative oar in rustic wood offers wall decoration a new way to achieve a bold look.

The Waiwai people were isolated until the mid-1950s, when major changes took place in their culture with the intervention of a missionary organization. They currently inhabit the Trombetas-Mapuera indigenous land, in Oriximiná, in western Pará. Attempts to evangelize the people continue to this day, making crafts an important practice to keep the cultural identity alive and generate income for the community.

The wooden oar is also specially painted with ethnic-style graphics that give the piece an elegant and unique rusticity.
