Decorative Mask Kaxinawá Ethnicity

CR583-60

Most of the Brazilian indigenous ethnic groups are aesthetically distinguished through adornments in feather art and body painting with different ethnic designs forming patterns. By using these characteristics as inspiration for artistic paintings, the Minas Gerais atelier Curral da Cor created unique handcrafted works based on the decorative mask with a fixed support as a base. The pieces are developed exclusively, with the entire process done by hand, giving an even more special character.

In this wooden mask, the Kaxinawá indigenous culture, self-named Humi Kuin, or “true men”, is valued in each carving and brushstroke of paint on the natural wood. Kene Kuin, which means “true drawing”, is the most significant ethnic pattern made with genipap of the tribe, present in facial and body painting, in ceramics, weaving and basketry. The motif, which represents the Kaxinawá identity, is present across the face of this handicraft from Minas Gerais, evidencing the adult phase of the portrayed Indian.

The piece makes clear the artistic excellence and the wide cultural repertoire that falls on the creations of Curral da Cor, promoting interior decoration with more originality and beauty.

Overall dimensions of the piece:
Height 34cm x Width 16cm x Depth 7.5cm

Mask only dimensions:
Height 22cm x Width 16cm
