St. Francis Sculpture in Wood

The religious sculpture of Saint Francis of Assisi from the Minas Gerais atelier is the interpretation of artists from Minas Gerais of the image of one of the most beloved saints, considered the protector of animals and, therefore, patron saint of ecology. Born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, this Italian saint received the epithet “Francisco” from his father, a noble merchant, after a trip to France. Assisi, in turn, is his hometown and where he became a preacher of the divine word, dedicating himself to the religious life. As well as miracles, his benevolence, humility, joy and dedication to nature and the poor earned him great devotees as a guide of the Order of Friars Minor or Order of San Francisco. San Francisco was canonized almost two years after his death, which occurred in 1226, and even today many miracles are attributed to those who need it most.
